HTC VIVE (2016) — specification and verdict
The original VIVE puts 1080x1200 per eye on two OLED panels at 90 Hz, across roughly 108 degrees of horizontal field of view. That was generous in 2016 and it is thin now: the PenTile layout carries only two subpixels per pixel, so procedure text, gauge faces and small labels on a machine model break up unless you walk the trainee right up to them. Position comes from two Vive Base Stations that have to be screwed to opposite corners of the room and powered, with tracking reported at 1000 Hz, which is why the room-scale movement still feels solid. IPD is a manual dial between 61 and 72 mm, and the headset with its fabric strap is 555 g hanging off a cable to a Windows PC. The bundled controllers are 6DoF, rechargeable, about 6 hours per charge, 203 g each, with a trackpad, trigger and grip buttons.
There is no fleet management story here at all: this is a PC peripheral, so whatever you deploy you deploy to the PCs, and every headset needs its own machine, its own two base stations and its own mounted corners. HTC took the original VIVE out of the channel around the Cosmos launch in 2019, so anything you buy in Poland or Germany today is second-hand, out of warranty, and dependent on SteamVR 1.0 base stations that are themselves long out of production. Hygiene is the stock foam facial interface, which is glued-in gasket rather than a wipe-clean swap tray. Budget for the PC, the cable run, the wall mounts and a spare face gasket before you count the headset, which launched at 799 USD with the base stations and controllers in the box.
Do not buy this for training in 2026. It is a discontinued 2016 PC headset that our standalone Android courses cannot run on at all, and its base-station rig makes it the most labour-intensive thing on this list to install. If a room already has a working VIVE rig and a SteamVR title someone paid for, keep using it until it dies; for anything new, take a standalone headset instead.

Who this device is for
This entry is for people who already own the hardware: a university lab, a maker space or a simulator room that was fitted out between 2016 and 2019 and still has both base stations on the wall. It is also for buyers checking whether a cheap second-hand VIVE on a marketplace is a shortcut into VR training. It is not for anyone specifying new equipment.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
HTC's own product page for the original VIVE now returns 403 and the model has been dropped from the site, so nothing here could be upgraded to a manufacturer source; the record leans on VRcompare throughout. HTC has never published an end-of-support date, a driver-support horizon or a spare-parts window for this generation, and the weight is the messiest figure of all: 555 g applies to the 2016 unit and 470 g to the 2017 revision, with no way to tell them apart from a listing photo. Battery capacity, panel brightness and pixels per degree were never published either.

- Can you still buy a new HTC VIVE (2016) anywhere in 2026?
- No. HTC pulled it from the channel around the launch of the Vive Cosmos in 2019, and it has since disappeared from HTC's own site — the product page returns an error. Everything on the market now is used, sold without warranty, and priced far below the 799 USD it launched at.
- Does the original HTC VIVE still need two SteamVR base stations mounted on the wall?
- Yes, and that is not optional. Its marker-based tracking only works inside the volume covered by two Vive Base Stations placed in opposite corners and mains-powered, so every room you want to train in needs its own pair, its own mounts and its own cabling. Newer headsets track themselves with onboard cameras and need nothing on the walls.
- Is the 1080x1200 OLED sharp enough to read procedure text in a safety course?
- Not reliably. At 1080x1200 per eye spread over about 108 degrees, with a PenTile layout carrying only two subpixels per pixel, small labels, instrument scales and body text smear unless the trainee is standing right in front of them. Course content built for this headset has to use oversized type, which changes how the scene is designed.
