Oculus Rift (CV1) — specification and verdict
Two OLED panels at 1080x1200 per eye and 90 Hz were competitive in 2016 and are not now: at 87 degrees of visible horizontal field of view, with a PenTile layout carrying two subpixels per pixel, small print on a rendered instrument panel or a safety label is guesswork rather than reading. IPD is a manual wheel spanning 58 to 72 mm, so trainees outside that range never get a sharp centre. Tracking is outside-in from two Oculus Sensors, which means every training room needs the sensors placed, cabled and re-calibrated after anyone moves a desk. The Touch controllers do track 6DoF with capacitive finger sensing, and that part still holds up, but they run on AA cells rated for about 20 hours, so a busy training day means a battery drawer. There is no hand tracking and no eye tracking.
This is a PC-tethered headset over HDMI 1.3 and USB 3.0, so every seat is a headset plus a VR-capable tower plus two sensors plus cable management, not a headset in a case. Our Android-based standalone courses do not run on it at all, so nothing we ship reaches this hardware. There is no vendor MDM, no kiosk mode and no enterprise licensing programme behind it: Meta's own product page at oculus.com/rift now redirects to the Quest line, so there is no fleet console to enrol it in. Hygiene is on you as well, since we could find no current channel for replacement foam facial interfaces or any other spare part. Facebook stopped building PC-only headsets and wound the Rift line down with Rift S sales ending in 2021, so anything on offer in Poland or Germany today is used stock with no warranty path.
Do not buy this for training in 2026. The Rift line is closed, PC-only Oculus hardware ended with Rift S sales in 2021, and our courses are standalone Android VR applications that cannot run on a PC-tethered Rift. If you already own a room of them, treat them as demo hardware for PC software you already have, and budget for standalone headsets for anything you intend to certify people on.

Who this device is for
The only people this still suits are labs and universities with an existing Rift-era PC VR installation, a working Oculus PC runtime and content that was authored for it. For anyone specifying new safety or fire training hardware, this is the wrong shape entirely: it needs a gaming PC per seat, two sensors per room and a wired tether, and it cannot run standalone course packages.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Meta publishes nothing about this headset any more. The product page is a redirect, so there is no first-party spec sheet, no stated end-of-support date and no confirmed date on which the Oculus PC runtime stops recognising it. Every hardware figure in this record therefore comes from VRcompare rather than the manufacturer, including the 470 g weight with the strap and the 87-degree horizontal field of view. We could not verify a current street price, any certification, or a repair and spare-parts channel, and we found no vendor statement fixing the year CV1 units left production.

Oculus Rift (CV1) — frequently asked questions
- Do Skillsive VR training courses run on the Oculus Rift CV1?
- No. Our courses are standalone Android VR applications and the Rift CV1 is a PC-tethered display with no on-board operating system, so there is nothing on the headset to install them onto. Running them would require a completely different device class, which is why this record is marked incompatible rather than merely outdated.
- Did the Oculus Rift CV1 come with Touch controllers at launch?
- No. The Rift shipped on 28 March 2016 at 599 USD with a remote and a sensor, and the Oculus Touch controllers arrived separately on 6 December 2016 at 199 USD. Second-hand listings that quote the 599 USD figure as a controller bundle are conflating the two products.
- How many Oculus Sensors does a Rift CV1 need for room-scale tracking?
- Two. Tracking is outside-in, so the sensors sit on the desk and have to be positioned, cabled to free USB 3.0 ports and re-calibrated whenever the room is rearranged. That per-room setup cost is the main practical reason a Rift CV1 fleet is harder to move between training sites than any inside-out headset.
