HTC VIVE Cosmos Elite — specification and verdict
The Cosmos Elite pairs 1440x1700 LCD panels per eye at 90 Hz with the external-tracking faceplate, so all six degrees of freedom come from two VIVE Base Station 1.0 units rather than cameras on the headset. Text on labels and instrument faces is readable at that resolution, but the RGB-stripe LCD is a 2020 panel and fine print in a procedure sheet still needs to be scaled up. HTC quotes a maximum 110 degree field of view; VRcompare measured 97 degrees horizontally visible with 79.57 degrees of binocular overlap, which is the number that matches what a trainee actually sees. There is no eye tracking, no hand tracking and no face tracking, so every interaction runs through the two VIVE Controllers with their trackpad, dual-stage trigger and grip buttons. The flip-up visor lets a trainee glance at a real workpiece without removing the headset, and IPD is set by hand between 61 and 72 mm.
This is a tethered device: each seat needs a Windows 10 or 11 PC with DisplayPort 1.2 and a USB 3.0 port, a GTX 970 class GPU or better, plus two mains-powered base stations mounted above a room-scale area of roughly 3.5 by 3.5 m. That mounting work, not the headset, is the real cost of a room. There is no vendor MDM and no kiosk mode, so content is managed as Windows software on each PC, and the foam facial interface is the only hygiene part you can swap between trainees. HTC withdrew the Cosmos line from the US in July 2023 and no longer lists it for sale in Poland or Germany, so a fleet today means used units and no spare-parts guarantee.
Do not buy the Cosmos Elite for a training programme in 2026. It is discontinued, it needs a VR-capable PC and two mounted base stations per seat, and our Android-based standalone courses do not run on it at all. If you already own a room of them for Steam-based simulation, keep using them until the base stations or controllers fail; for new deployments choose a standalone headset instead.

Who this device is for
It suits a lab that already owns SteamVR base stations and wants PC-rendered simulation with sub-millimetre positional stability, for example CAD review or a bespoke Unity simulator. It is the wrong device for anyone who needs headsets that a trainer can carry into a plant, hand over and manage centrally.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
HTC never published a headset weight, dimensions, lens type or refresh options beyond 90 Hz; the 702 g figure with strap comes from VRcompare, not the maker. HTC and VRcompare also disagree on optics: the spec page claims a maximum 110 degree field of view while VRcompare lists 97 degrees horizontally visible. HTC has published no end-of-support or driver-support date for the Cosmos line, so how long SteamVR and the Cosmos software keep working is unknown. VRcompare lists dual colour passthrough cameras, which belong to the standard Cosmos faceplate rather than the Elite external-tracking one, so we left passthrough off the record.

HTC VIVE Cosmos Elite — frequently asked questions
- Does the VIVE Cosmos Elite work without base stations?
- No. The Elite ships with the external-tracking faceplate, which has no tracking cameras of its own, so the two VIVE Base Station 1.0 units in the box have to be mounted and powered before the headset tracks in 6DoF. The standard Cosmos faceplate does inside-out tracking, but swapping it means buying a different faceplate.
- Can I run Skillsive VR courses on a Cosmos Elite?
- No. Our courses are Android applications that run on standalone headsets, and the Cosmos Elite is a PC-tethered display that renders from a Windows machine over DisplayPort 1.2. There is no way to install our courses on it. For a training fleet, pick a standalone Android headset instead.
- Is the VIVE Cosmos Elite still sold in 2026?
- No. HTC quietly withdrew the Cosmos line in the US in July 2023, after it had already been out of stock for months, and it is not offered in Poland or Germany today. The launch kit with controllers and both base stations was 899 USD; anything you find now is a used unit sold without HTC warranty support.
