Working at height: VR practice without the fall

What counts as working at height, what the training must achieve, and how VR lets crews rehearse judgement and procedure before they leave the ground.

What counts as work at height?
Broadly, any task where a person could fall to a lower level and be injured by the fall. The legal threshold differs by country. In Poland, § 105 of the general OHS regulation defines it as work on a surface at least 1.0 m above the floor or ground level.
When is a raised surface not treated as work at height in Poland?
Under the same § 105, a surface does not count as work at height if it is enclosed on all sides to a height of at least 1.5 m by solid walls or walls with glazed windows, or fitted with other permanent structures or devices protecting the worker against a fall.
What should working at height training actually cover?
Three things beyond gear familiarity: deciding whether the job needs to be done at height at all, applying protection in the right order (elimination, then collective protection, then personal fall arrest), and knowing the rescue plan for a worker left hanging in a harness.
Can VR replace practical harness training?
No, and it is not meant to. Fitting a harness to a real body and running a physical rescue drill stay hands-on. VR covers the part classrooms handle badly: repeated, consequence-carrying practice in judgement, inspection and sequence, with no exposure to a real fall.
Why do experienced workers fall on short, routine jobs?
Because the effort of clipping on feels disproportionate to a two-minute task, and because familiarity dulls the sense of exposure. Short jobs, the first few metres of a climb and repeat visits to the same roof are where people stop treating the edge as an edge.
