Frequently asked questions

What is the real difference between a standalone and a tethered VR headset?
A standalone headset like Meta Quest 3 runs training apps on its own built-in chip, with no computer needed. A tethered headset like Varjo XR-4 renders the scene on a separate PC and streams it to the headset over a cable, which is why it needs a workstation-class computer to work at all.
Which is cheaper for a training fleet?
Standalone, by a wide margin. Meta lists Quest 3 (512 GB) at $599.99, and it needs nothing else. A tethered professional headset like Varjo XR-4 needs a PC that meets its own minimum spec — an 8-core desktop CPU and at least an RTX 3090-class GPU — before the headset even turns on.
Can a standalone headset also connect to a PC?
Yes. Quest 3 supports Meta Horizon Link, which streams PC VR content over a USB cable if you add a compatible Windows PC later. Vive Focus Vision goes further and ships as a hybrid: standalone by default, with a DisplayPort mode for PC VR streaming built in.
When does a tethered headset make sense for training?
When the training depends on fine visual detail a phone-class chip cannot render: cockpit and vehicle simulation, precision inspection, or any scenario where reading a gauge or a control layout is the whole point of the exercise. For most safety, onboarding and procedural training, standalone is enough.
