Frequently asked questions

How often should a shared VR training headset be cleaned?
Before and after every session, not just at the end of the day. The face cushion touches a different forehead and set of eyes each time a headset changes hands, so treat each hand-off the way you would a shared piece of PPE — a quick wipe every time, not a weekly deep clean.
Can I use alcohol wipes on a Meta Quest headset?
No, not on the body. Meta's own instructions say not to use chemical cleansers or alcohol on the headset and to clean it with a dry (or lightly dampened) microfiber cloth instead. The facial interface is the exception: remove it and hand-wash it separately with mild detergent.
Can I use alcohol wipes on an HTC Vive headset?
Yes, on the hard plastic body — HTC's own cleaning guide lists a diluted 70–75% ethanol solution and specific disinfecting wipes as approved. It draws a hard line at the foam face cushion, which should never be wiped with liquid disinfectant, and at the lenses, which take a dry cloth only.
Do UV-C sanitizing boxes actually work?
Vendors such as Cleanbox advertise a roughly one-minute cycle that eliminates 99.999% of pathogens on the headset surface, but that figure comes from the manufacturer's own marketing, not an independent published study. Treat it as a plausible selling point, not a peer-reviewed number, and pair a UV-C box with — not instead of — a basic wipe-down routine.
What is the cheapest way to keep a shared headset hygienic?
Disposable face covers or a spare set of washable silicone liners, swapped between users, plus a manufacturer-approved wipe for the hard surfaces. Neither costs more than a few dollars per headset and both work on any device, no hardware purchase required.
